Sangchen Dorje Gompa (Tib. gsang chen rdo rje dgon pa) is the oldest monastery located on the outskirts of the village of Pedong. It belongs to the Drugpa Kagyü order (Tib. 'brug pa bka' brgyud) and is a dependency of the Pharo monastery in Bhutan. In the 1950s, when René Nebesky-Wojkowitz visited Pedong only the old now dilapidated monastery at the top of a small hill existed. The new monastery complex is located on the opposite slope of the hill. It was founded by the 9th Zhabdrung Rinpoche Jigme Ngawang Namgyal (who had to flee Bhutan in 1962) in the second half of the 20th century. The Kudung Lhakang was built after the death of the Rinpoche and encloses a golden chorten which holds his remains (probably mummified in a seated position).
